The Allender Center: The Mary We Forgot
Just as it’s important to understand our own stories to make sense of our lives today, it’s also crucial to examine the stories within the church’s history to better understand how they are playing out in the present.
That’s why we’re excited to welcome back author, professor, and church historian The Rev. Dr. Jennifer Powell McNutt as she explores the life of a woman who played a significant role in the ministry, burial, and resurrection of Jesus: Mary Magdalene.
For too long, the church has misunderstood Mary Magdalene—her story has often been confused, scandalized, and undervalued. Yet, she was present at the resurrection. But why was this so important? Why was she chosen to witness and then commissioned to “go and tell,” becoming the first apostle?
This powerful story reminds us that God calls the ordinary, imperfect, and unexpected to uniquely reveal the gospel.
Undeceptions: The Theologians
Theology: It’s a dry term that conjures images of old academics writing dusty books that will never be read.
However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The study of theology is the study of who we are as humans, and how we can make sense of both God and the complexities of the world .
So, who are the theologians we should all know about?
Center for Pastor Theologians: Know the Theologians
David and Jennifer McNutt join the podcast to discuss their recent book Know the Theologians, an introduction for the church to theologians who have had a significant impact in the history of the church. In our conversation we cover such questions as: Who were these theologians? Why do they matter in church history and for the present? How big is the family of God? All this and more on this episode.
Undeceptions: The Reformation I
The Reformation: one of the greatest ruptures in European history, a rupture that permanently split the church, triggered wars, created new city-states, and even led, in the opinion of many experts, to the Enlightenment, Science, and the secularization of the West.
It’s such a big deal we’re going to take two whole episodes to examine it—and still, only scratch the surface.
How did one man go from a pious local friar in an obscure backwater town to the leader of a global movement that ripped Christianity in two (and then three, then four, and ultimately thousands of Protestant denominations!).
And what is the real legacy of this thing we call The Reformation?
